2016 EU-US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

Logistics

We look forward to your participation at the 2016 EU-US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium to be held October 17-19 at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.

Meeting Format

The symposium runs from Monday morning through Wednesday morning, with a welcome dinner/registration on Sunday evening, October 16. In order to achieve the objectives of the program, we ask that you attend all sessions of the entire symposium. This meeting is unlike other meetings you may attend where it is possible to pick and choose the sessions in which you wish to participate. In addition to showing consideration toward all the speakers, who have worked hard preparing for this meeting, you will reap the maximum benefit from the symposium by participating fully in both the formal sessions and informal events over the course of the 2-½ day meeting.

Posters: In addition to the technical talks given at the symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to present their work in an afternoon poster session on Monday, October 17. These posters will be displayed throughout the meeting and provide an opportunity for every participant to share information about his/her work. The material presented can be on posters, but could also include—particularly for those from industry—videos, demonstrations of devices, etc. See more information about the poster session

Tour: There will be a cultural bus tour of Helsinki on Tuesday afternoon.

Meeting Location

The meeting will be held at Aalto University Design Factory, 10km from Helsinki city center. It is served by Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL), 17km north of Helsinki. US attendees flying from the US should book flights to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and will need to depart the US on Saturday, October 15 in order to arrive in Finland in time to attend the full meeting. US travelers whose travel is being paid by NAE must book their flights through Uniglobe Kentlands Travel per the email sent to US speakers and committee members on July 7. A travel memo was emailed to EU attendees separately.

The meeting site is walkable from the hotel (500 meters / 1/3 mile).

Ground Transportation in Helsinki

  • Taxi: take a taxi from the airport directly to the hotel, with travel time 25 minutes. Finnish taxis reportedly are reliable, of good quality, and have uniform pricing. According to the hotel, a taxi from the airport to the hotel costs about 30 € one-way, or 50 € roundtrip ($34/$56).
  • Shared Taxi: take an "airport taxi" (a shared taxi with others having a similar direction) from the airport directly to the hotel (somewhat cheaper that a regular taxi). "Airport taxis" are also reported to be reliable and have clearly-marked counters in the arrival hall. For shared airport rides, click here.
  • Train: take a train to the city (cost 5.50 €; travel time 40 minutes) and a taxi from there to the hotel (cost approximately 25 €). There is also bus service from the city to Otaniemi, but finding the departure platform requires some local knowledge.
