About the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, originally established in 1860 in memory of the eminent scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), devoted itself until 1923 to sponsoring research travel abroad by German scholars. The Foundation was re-organized in 1925 with the aim of supporting foreign researchers and doctoral candidates engaged in studies in Germany. After the collapse of the German Reich in 1945, the Foundation was re-established in 1953 by the Federal Republic of Germany as an independent foundation with headquarters in Bonn. Since then the Foundation has sponsored more than 24,000 scholars and scientists from all disciplines. It has been maintaining a network of Humboldtians from 130 countries worldwide - including 43 Nobel Prize winners.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation annually enables more than 1,900 researchers from all over the world to spend time researching in Germany. Each year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation:

  • approx. 600 research fellowships to highly qualified foreign scholars and scientists, who have completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago, enabling them to undertake long-term periods of research in Germany;
  • up to 100 research awards to internationally recognized foreign scholars and scientists (who are nominated by recognized German scholars/scientists);
  • up to 25 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awards to outstanding scholars and scientists from abroad who have completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago;
