About the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, originally established in 1860 in memory of the eminent scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), devoted itself until 1923 to sponsoring research travel abroad by German scholars. The Foundation was re-organized in 1925 with the aim of supporting foreign researchers and doctoral candidates engaged in studies in Germany. After the collapse of the German Reich in 1945, the Foundation was re-established in 1953 by the Federal Republic of Germany as an independent foundation with headquarters in Bonn. Since then the Foundation has sponsored more than 24,000 scholars and scientists from all disciplines. It has been maintaining a network of Humboldtians from 130 countries worldwide - including 43 Nobel Prize winners.
